With the exception of the war years between 1914 and 1918, large numbers of files from all periods of German foreign policy have been published in various series. The best way to prepare your visit to the archives is to study the documents that have already been published. Some of the publications are already available online.
By publishing the “Biographisches Handbuch des deutschen Auswärtigen Dienstes 1871–1945” [“Biographical Handbook of the German Foreign Service, 1871–1945”], the Political Archive is creating an important tool to help researchers use the “Reich” record group.
The Political Archive occasionally also publishes other documentation on its work and holdings.
The German brochure, “Das Politische Archiv des Auswärtigen Amts” [“The Political Archive of the Federal Foreign Office”], can be downloaded or ordered as a printed copy free of charge.
